The European Commission has authorised the use of the ingredients in Apeel’s plant-derived coating, allowing for EU expansion.
Food waste in Europe has reached 88 million tonnes annually, with associated costs estimated at €143 billion. Calculated per person, this amounts to the wastage of approximately two fully packed shopping carts weighing about 82 kilograms, with a merchandise value of €234.
The Apeel solution has allegedly demonstrated a greater than 50 percent food waste reduction on average at the retail level in the US through its shelf-life increasing coating technology, and the company hopes to see similar figures in Europe.
Apeel is a family of plant-derived coatings that fresh food growers, suppliers and retailers allegedly use to keep produce fresh. Produce with Apeel is said to stay fresh two to three times longer, which aims to promote more sustainable growing practices, better quality food and less food waste for everyone.
Having already launched Apeel Limes and organic Apeel Apples in US stores and trialled the technology in some UK stores, Apeel has announced that it will bring Apeel Avocados to Europe with Nature’s Pride, its European supply partner. Nature’s Pride has integrated the Apeel solution across its avocado value chain to bring Apeel Avocados to Edeka and Netto in Germany, and Salling Group stores, Føtex and Bilka, in Denmark.
Apeel Avocados are said to be the first Apeel produce category to arrive in Europe, but other categories are expected to roll out in the future.
