Food and beverage products are recalled due to reasons ranging from contamination to incorrect labelling, and here is New Food’s roundup of the most recent cases.

Sainsbury’s recalls Plant Pioneers Vegan Shroomballs

Sainsbury’s has taken the precautionary step of recalling Plant Pioneers Vegan Shroomballs because some packs may contain small pieces of white plastic. The possible presence of plastic makes this product unsafe to eat.

Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

Consumers who have purchased the product has been advised not to eat it and, instead, return it to the store from where it was purchased for a full refund when next visiting for groceries and other essentials.

Premier Foods recalls Bisto Original Gravy Powder

Premier Foods is recalling Bisto Original Gravy Powder because it contains milk which is not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents. This only affects products sold in certain Asda stores in the north of England.

Premier Foods has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tells them what to do if they have bought the product.

Consumers who have purchased the product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents have been advised not to eat it. If customers are making an essential trip, they can return the item in-store for a full refund.

Fry’s Family Foods recalls Fry’s Mushroom Country Style Pie

Fry’s Family Foods is recalling Fry’s Mushroom Country Style Pie because it contains milk which is not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

Due to a packaging error, some boxes contain chicken and ham pie, which is also not suitable for people avoiding the consumption of meat. The affected product has only been sold in Sainsbury’s stores.

CHS Nutrition recalls Champion Meat Goat Pellets R20, Medicated Feed

PGG/HSC Feed Company, LLC, dba CHS Nutrition of Hermiston, Oregon, is recalling 510 bags of Champion Meat Goat Pellets R20, Medicated Feed due to elevated level of Rumensin (monensin).

Monensin is an FDA-approved drug for use in certain animal feeds. However, if the feed contains excessive amounts, the feed can cause monensin toxicity in a number of animal species including goats. Goats ingesting excessive levels of monensin in feed are susceptible to injury and death. In goats, signs and symptoms can include bloated stomach, bloody urine, shortness of breath, muscle weakness or cramps, rapid breathing and death.

goat feedIn humans, monensin could affect handlers of highly concentrated products by causing irritation of the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract through direct exposure. People or animals who consume meat or milk from animals exposed to very high levels of monensin are at risk of indirect exposure, which could potentially lead to ingestion toxicity.

Customers reported that three goats have died, and three additional goats were ill but have recovered to date.

The recalled product was found to contain elevated levels of monensin due to a mixing error during manufacturing. The recalled product was put on hold pending testing after a customer complaint. Test results confirmed a higher than expected level and this recall was initiated. CHS Nutrition cannot account for up to 15 bags out of 510 bags distributed to date.

Nestle Prepared Foods Company recalls Lean Cuisine Fettuccini Alfredo products

Nestle Prepared Foods Company, a Jonesboro, Ark. establishment, is recalling approximately 29,002 pounds of chicken product labelled as Lean Cuisine Fettuccini Alfredo because the product contains undeclared soy, a known allergen, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced. The Lean Cuisine Fettuccini Alfredo is not supposed to contain chicken and chicken does not appear in the ingredients statement or on the label.

The frozen, Lean Cuisine Fettuccini Alfredo products were produced and packaged on April 22, 2020. The following products are subject to recall: The products were distributed in shipping cartons labelled as LC Chicken Fettuccini bearing the mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

The problem was discovered when the firm received multiple consumer complaints that the product labelled as Lean Cuisine Fettuccini Alfredo contained chicken that is not referenced on the label or ingredients.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.  

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
