Recall Roundup: E.coli and metal contaminants

Undeclared allergens

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the recall of Aldi’s Southern Grove On the Go Sweet & Salty Trail Mix 8 Pack Caddies 1.5 oz, due to the presence almonds that are not on the ingredients list. The recall only applies to pouches with a UPC 4099100005202 and a date code of Best By JUL 27 2021. For a full list of the states where the product was sold see the FDA website.

Similarly in the UK, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced the recall of a whole host of roasted coffee beans covered in dark chocolate due to undeclared almond. For the full list of retailers and products affected, see the FSA’s website.

Staying in the UK, Asda has also issued a food recall after the detection of undeclared milk in its plant-based potato skins. The product is past its sell-by date, but it is suitable for home freezing so some consumers may still have it in their freezers.

Meanwhile, Au P’tit Marché Traiteur Inc in Canada has recalled its Amour & Tradition brand fondues due to the presence of undeclared wheat. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises those with an allergy to wheat or that suffer with coeliac disease or other gluten-related disorders should not consume the recalled products. Details are listed on its website.

Gelsius has also recalled its IQF sliced white apples in Canada, this time due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. Both the 5kg and 10kg packs are affected – consumers should look out for the UPC codes F1234567744 and F12345677043.

In Germany, the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has announced the recall of Best Moments’ Candied Cherries after unlisted hazelnuts were discovered. The cherries have been sold in Penny supermarkets in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hessen, Bremen, Rhineland-Pfalz, Lower Saxony, and North Rhine Westphalia.

Also in Germany, hemp oil sold in Bavaria has been recalled. After testing, cannabinoids in the oil were found to have a sedative effect, which the BVL says can lead to reduced memory function and a lowered diastolic blood pressure. Customers who bought the oil from Straifferhof (run by Thomas Plank in Haimhausen, Bavaria) should return it to the yard (the address can be found here) for a full refund.

STEC E. coli

Fresh Express in the US has recalled a limited quantity of its 10.5 oz Fresh Express Caesar Supreme Kit due to fears it is contaminated with STEC 026 E.Coli bacteria. Products with an expiry date of 8 November and a product code S296 are affected and should not be consumed. Advice from the FDA is available here.
