This week’s quickfire roundup of the very latest news includes a new commitment from PepsiCo, as well as a Salmonella outbreak in the US.
PepsiCo leads our weekly roundup of the latest food industry, after the food and beverage manufacturer announced its commitment to become “net water positive” by 2030.
The company says it will replenish more water than it uses in high-water-risk areas as it aims to deliver safe water access for up to 100 million people by the end of the decade.
Elsewhere, UK charity Action on Sugar has called for greater responsibility from manufacturers of yoghurts targeted towards children, after it was found that many contain a large chunk of a child’s maximum recommended daily intake of sugars. As the UK’s fight against obesity looks set to continue, Action on Sugar is calling on the UK Government to ensure that products high in sugars are labelled as such and do not display “healthy” product claims.
It’s a widely held belief that drought is the cause of world hunger, but researchers from Columbia University have suggested that in actual fact we should be paying more attention to conflict as a contributor to malnutrition. Areas such as northeast Nigeria were highlighted, where the Boko Haram insurgency has destabilised the region and caused food insecurity for many.
Lastly, a US outbreak of Salmonella is being investigated by authorities, with frozen cooked shrimp thought to be the culprit. Four states have reported cases so far, with three people hospitalised as a result of the outbreak.
