Recall Roundup: undeclared nuts, fish and Salmonella contamination

Undeclared peanuts

Following FGS Ingredients Ltd’s recall last week of over 50 products containing mustard powder due to possible peanut contamination, several other items have been added to the recall list. These products pose a potential health risk for anyone with a peanut allergy.

If you have bought any of the recalled products listed on the site and have an allergy to peanuts, do not eat them. Instead, please follow the advice mentioned in the attached notices on the FSA announcement page.

Potential Salmonella contamination

In the UK this week, supermarket giants Co-op and Waitrose have recalled products due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Co-op has taken the precautionary step of recalling its Co-op Smooth Brussels Pâté, 175g, due to potential contamination with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products include use-by dates of 19-Nov-24, 21-Nov-24, and 28-Nov-24.

Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps. Listeria monocytogenes symptoms can be similar to flu and may include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, nausea, and diarrhoea.

If you have bought any of the above product, do not eat it. Instead, return it to your local store for a refund or replacement.

Waitrose & Partners is recalling No1 Pesto alla Genovese, 145g, as Salmonella has been found in the product.

Consumers are advised to return any packages of this product with the use-by date of 26-Sep-24 to their local Waitrose & Partners branch for a full refund.

Undeclared almonds and cashews

In the latest US recall, Truly Good Foods is recalling its 3.25oz packages of Grabeez The Big Cheese Snack Mix cups due to undeclared almonds and cashews.

The product is packaged in a clear plastic container with a green label and includes the UPC 094184004398 and a best-before date of 16-Apr-25.

The recall was initiated after a customer noticed an incorrect cup. The company discovered that the tree nut-containing product was distributed in mislabelled packaging that did not declare the presence of almonds and cashews. Subsequent investigation indicates the issue was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.

Customers are urged to dispose of the recalled product and can submit for a full refund on their website.

Potential Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes

Also in the US, ANSWERS Pet Food is voluntarily withdrawing certain lots of ANSWERS Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs, ANSWERS Straight Beef Formula for Dogs, and ANSWERS Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs, following reports by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that samples tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

While Listeria monocytogenes rarely causes illness in dogs, mild symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting are possible. Pets with Salmonella infections may show lethargy, diarrhoea (or bloody diarrhoea), fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only display decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.

Even if a dog is asymptomatic, it can still be a carrier and transmit the bacteria to humans. If a dog has consumed a product from the identified lot, pet owners are encouraged to consult their veterinarian if symptoms occur.

FDA guidelines recommend any product from the listed lots that has not yet been consumed should be thrown out or destroyed in a manner that ensures children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it. They also suggest wearing gloves or using paper towels when handling contaminated food and sealing it in a bag before disposal.

Undeclared fish

Finally, Avole Inc. is recalling 7oz bags of Bacalaitos Criollos Cod Frying Mix due to undeclared fish in the ingredients or contents statement. Individuals with a fish allergy or severe sensitivity are at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. 

The recalled product, distributed in Puerto Rico, features a best before date of 06/2025 and item number 310925.

Consumers who have purchased Bacalaitos Criollos Cod Frying Mix are urged to return it to the place of purchase.
