Recall roundup: Listeria monocytogenes and undeclared sulphites

Undeclared peanuts

In the latest UK recall, FGS Ingredients Ltd is recalling various spice products due to the potential presence of peanuts, which are not listed on the label, posing a risk for those with peanut allergies.

The affected products include:

• Favourit Cajun, Fajita, and Curry Powders (Mild, Medium, Hot) in various sizes (40g and 6 x 500g) with all batch numbers and best before dates up to July/August 2026.
• Dunnes Stores Cajun Seasoning, Curry Powders (Mild, Medium, Hot), and Black Mustard Seeds, with all batch numbers and best before dates up to 31 July 2026.

This recall applies to items purchased before 3 October 2024.

Consumers who have bought any of the above products and have an allergy to peanuts should not eat them. Instead, they are advised to return them to the store where they were bought for a full refund.

Undeclared sulphites

Also in the UK, North South Wines Ltd is recalling Chill Bill Spritzy Red Wine (75cl) because it contains sulphites, which are not declared on the label. This product is a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.

The recalled products feature the lot numbers L4011B1 and L4185B1.

Customers who have bought the above product should return it to the store where it was bought for a full refund (with or without a receipt).

Undeclared allergens

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s is recalling its Sainsbury’s Onion Rings (125g) because they contain milk, soya, and wheat (gluten), which are not mentioned on the label. The recalled products feature a best before date of 8 February 2025.

This means the recalled product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya, an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, wheat, gluten, or coeliac disease.

Consumers with an allergy or intolerance should return the product to the store where it was bought for a full refund.

Undeclared wheat

In the US this week, Tipical Latin Food Corp is recalling Cachapa de Maiz sweet corn pancakes labelled under Los Andes Foods, because they may contain undeclared wheat.

People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Lot numbers for this recalled product range from 2622404 to 2772412. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased Cachapa De Maiz – Los Andes Foods are urged to contact the company, Trimar USA LLC, to arrange the return of the product.

Potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination

Two US companies are recalling products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes:

• Enoki King Mushroom Farm is recalling lot 4877 of its 5.3-ounce (150g) packages of Enoki Mushroom.
• Reser’s Fine Foods is voluntarily recalling a limited number of meal kits due to the inclusion of recalled chicken from an outside ingredient supplier (BrucePac). Consumers should refer to the bottom of the FDA  announcement for the products, batch codes, and use-by dates affected.

Consumers who have purchased any package of Enoki with the code 4877 are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone who has purchased the Reser’s Fine Foods meal kits should not consume any part of the kits. Instead, they may return it to the store for a full refund or discard the item.

Undeclared sesame

Wismettac Asian Foods is recalling 3.52 oz packages of Shirakiku brand Korean Seasoned Seaweed. The product contains the undeclared allergen sesame. People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to sesame run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

The recall was initiated after the discovery that the product contained an undeclared allergen (sesame). Further investigation revealed that the issue was caused by the unintentional use of incorrect packaging material for the product.

The last distribution of the product in the marketplace was on 8 October 2024.

Consumers who have purchased the product are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
