The European Food Fraud Community of Practice heralds a new era of food integrity

With major financial support from the European Commission, this month we proudly launched the European Food Fraud Community of Practice (EFFCoP). The team responsible for creating this community, which includes myself, believes it marks a pivotal moment in the battle against food fraud, both nationally, internationally and indeed globally. EFFCoP will provide an amazing platform for driving collaboration, knowledge-sharing and real action. Climate change and geopolitical shifts are wreaking havoc with food supplies the world over; a problem exacerbated by the increasing complexity of our global food supply chains. These multiple challenges render fraudulent activity a perpetual threat – and the risks have never been greater.

The role of EFFCoP

The European Food Fraud Community of Practice is designed to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including industry professionals, regulatory bodies, academics, policymakers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Its intention is to foster dialogue and promote the very best practices for developing innovative solutions to detect, prevent and mitigate food fraud across the continent and beyond.

Our new Community of Practice seeks to:

  1. Facilitate knowledge exchange – sharing insights and expertise among members to gain a deeper understanding of emerging threats and trends in food fraud
  2. Promote collaborative research – encouraging joint research initiatives that advance detection methods, technologies and policy frameworks
  3. Enhance regulatory frameworks – supporting the harmonisation of food fraud regulations across the EU to close gaps that fraudsters exploit
  4. Increase consumer confidence – ensuring the integrity of food products to safeguard public trust in the food system.

Why now?

This new collective effort, grounded in science and strengthened by cooperation, is essential to safeguard the integrity of food supply nationally and internationally.

The need for a truly collaborative approach among very diverse stakeholder groups to combat food fraud has never been more urgent. Globalisation has numerous advantages, including the enhancement of food security, but it has also created a landscape that offers too many opportunities for fraudulent activity to gain traction along many complex and opaque supply chains.

The establishment of EFFCoP reflects the growing recognition among many stakeholders that the current often fragmented approach to addressing these challenges is insufficient. We firmly believe instead that this new collective effort, grounded in science and strengthened by cooperation, is essential to safeguard the integrity of food supply nationally and internationally.
