Overview
Uhde High Pressure Technologies (Uhde HPT), being a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp AG and having been a system provider in the area of high-pressure technology for more than 80 years, develops, designs and manufactures components (vessels, valves, pumps, fittings etc.) and complete systems (turn-key systems). Those systems are mainly used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The product range for the food industry also comprises systems by which food is cured gently by high-pressure pasteurization. The advantage of that technology is that products can be treated in their final packages which allow the efficient elimination of contaminations originating from processing and packing processes. Thus, vitamins, flavorings and tastes with food treated that way stay preserved and the method even allows the processing of thermally susceptible products, because the process is implemented at cool temperatures.
Therefore, from the customer’s point of view this kind of treatment is a safe, sustainable and biological process extending shelf life and allowing to do without preservatives. Apart from industrial production facilities with capacities of up to 700 litres and the operating pressure of 6,000 bar Uhde HPT also manufactures special plants for the sterilization of spores and germs. Those special plants are operated at the increased pressure of 7,000 bar and temperatures of up to 121 °C. Test and laboratory machines with a capacity of up to 2 to 4 litres for process development or the processing of small quantities round the portfolio offered by Uhde HPT.
In addition to the high-pressure pasteurization systems Uhde HPT has specialized in customized high-pressure systems obtaining extracts from organic materials (e.g. tastes and special ingredients) by means of supercritical gases (e.g. carbon dioxide). Initial materials can e.g. be spices or herbs, but also algae. By means of such Uhde HPT manufactured extraction systems it is possible – amongst others – to materialize the decaffeination of coffee or tea, the preparation of spice extracts or also the preparation of specific powders for the pharmaceutical industry with powder being able to be refined further by impregnation.
