2 Sisters Food Group to go before Parliamentary committee

Ranjit Singh Boparan, the head of the scandal-hit firm, has been invited to appear before the committee to give evidence in an enquiry over alleged infractions of food standards.

Last month, a joint investigation between The Guardian and ITV News caught workers at a poultry processing plant in West Bromwich altering the slaughter date on chicken among other infractions.

The owners of the plant, 2 Sister’s Food Group, responded by temporarily suspending work whilst they conducted their own investigations.

Yesterday, the EFRA Committee announced its intentions to hold their own inquiry.

A spokesman for the committee said: “The short inquiry will look into the role and performance of the regulatory and accreditation bodies in maintaining food standards and food safety, and the potential ramifications of the allegations made against 2 Sisters for the poultry sector and the wider food chain.”

Joining Mr Boparan in giving evidence will be representatives from the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Assured Food Standards and the British Poultry Council (BPC).

The hearing is due to take place on October 25, according to The Guardian.
