We need to send out consistent messages to consumers that food imperfection does not reflect on food safety, nutrition or flavor quality. Similarly food labels need to be standardized to eliminate misconceptions that “best before” is equivalent to “consume by” dates. Quality does not directly relate to safety, but rather to flavour and nutrition. The quality of most foods is acceptable well beyond the “best before” date. The BB date indicates when the quality of the food begins to diminish and is not absolute.
