Is innovation for sustainability risking food safety?

It feels like the security of our planet and its resources is slipping from our grasp, focusing global efforts on improvements to sustainable production. But how is this shift affecting food safety? We asked the experts…

1. How can we ensure the food we eat is safe, nutritious, authentic and produced to the highest ethical standards in a sustainable way? What are the challenges in achieving this?

Virginia Siebenrok (VS):  Food safety must be a shared responsibility among us all. From the UN World Food Programme (WFP) perspective – with millions of people around the world reliant on lifesaving assistance – we ensure food safety and quality measures are implemented in line with applicable national and/or international standards and guidance as well as WFP’s processes. We continue to advocate for food safety processes and protocols to be embedded across all operations from the beginning of programme design, including assessing suppliers to ensuring proper storage, transportation and distribution of assistance. Having food safety standards is critical to ensuring that we distribute safe, nutritious food to those who need it most.
