Product inspection – a must for meat

Neil Giles, a product inspection specialist with Mettler Toledo, looks at the vital importance of product inspection in the meat and poultry industry and the benefits that advanced inspection systems can offer manufacturers in terms of productivity, protection and quality.

The meat and poultry industry is very competitive, so producing significant volumes of product that is of a consistently high quality and that is also compliant with food safety regulations is a daily challenge. The harsh environments in meat processing add to the many elements requiring consideration when putting together a product inspection programme. Food safety is of paramount importance of course, and meat processors should conduct a review of manufacturing processes in line with the requirements of the HACCP food safety framework. Any risks identified in the review should be mitigated by establishing Critical Control Points (CCPs) and installing product inspection equipment. For meat processors, X-ray and metal detection systems are the most likely systems to be deployed.
