Free range eggs are not currently available on UK supermarket shelves as a result of avian flu. Birds reared for meat and eggs have been ordered to be kept indoors to reduce the risk of outbreaks of the disease – a return date for free range eggs is currently unknown.
In other news, a new study has found that excess sugar consumption is costing Canada billions of dollars every year in healthcare expenses. The researchers behind the study have urged the country’s government to put a sugar tax in place to help people avoid associated diseases.
And finally, a sustainable substitute for palm oil has been created by scientists, who have produced oils from microalgae. They argue that this could become a replacement for palm oil in food production.
