In the latest instalment of Recall Roundup (3-9 January 2025), New Food highlights recent food and beverage recalls in the UK and US.
Undeclared milk
In the UK this week, TJX Europe are recalling several Sultans Turkish Delights products, because they contain milk which is not mentioned on the label. This means the products are a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk.
The recalled products are:
- Sultans Chocolate Covered Lemon Turkish Delight (250g) best before: 25 September 2026, product code: 760240
- Sultans Chocolate Covered Strawberry Turkish Delight (250g) best before: 25 September 2026, product code: 760241
- Sultans Chocolate Covered Pistachio Turkish Delight (250g) best before: 25 September 2026, product code: 760242
- Sultans Chocolate Covered Pistachio Turkish Delight (225g) best before: 25 September 2026, product code: 760246
If you have bought the above products and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, do not eat them. Instead, return them to any TK Maxx or Homesense store for a refund or a replacement.
Excess Vitamin D
TriOn Pharma is recalling two food supplement products, Aactive D3 Drops and Aactive D3 Solution because they contain higher levels of vitamin D3 than written on the label.
Excessive intakes of vitamin D can cause various adverse health effects because of hypercalcaemia (high blood calcium level). Symptoms and signs may include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, weakness, lethargy, constipation and non-specific aches and pains.
The recalled products have the following batch code and best before dates:
- Aactive D3 2,000iu/ml Oral Drops (20ml) batch code: LS23317, best before: November 2025
- Aactive D3 2,000iu/ml Oral Solution (50ml) batch code: LS23318, best before: November 2025
Consumers are advised not to take them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.
Salmonella contamination
In the US this week, Blue Ridge Beef is recalling 1,350 lbs. of their Kitten Mix (Lot N25-0716 and UPC 8542980013436) due to a contamination of Salmonella.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhoea, fever and vomiting, whereas some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
Consumers who have purchased this product are urged to return to place of purchase or destroy the food in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access. Furthermore, wash and sanitise pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers.
Potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination
Abbey Specialty Foods is recalling the Wicklow Gold Cheddar Nettle & Chive 5.2 oz product and Wicklow Gold Cheddar Tomato & Herb 5.2 oz product because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe, sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. In pregnant women, infection can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.
The products being recalled are:
- Wicklow Gold Cheddar Nettle & Chive (8/5.2 oz) item code: 28472, batch code: 24192, best before: 6/2/2025, UPC: 797776045730, case code: 73585016606300
- Wicklow Gold Cheddar Tomato & Herb (8/5.2 oz) item code: 28473, batch code: 24175, best before: 6/2/2025, UPC: 797776045778, case code: 73585017737300
To date, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse health events due to the consumption of these products.
Consumers that have any of the recalled products listed above should refrain from consuming them and return them to their place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of the products.
Undeclared wheat
Finally, Dierbergs Markets is recalling all of its 16oz Premium Home-Style Mashed Potatoes with a sell by date of 9 January 2025 because it contains an undeclared allergen of wheat.
No other Dierbergs’ branded products are affected by this recall.
Dierbergs is asking consumers who have bought the product to return them unopened to the place of purchase for a full refund.
