In the latest instalment of Recall Roundup (17-23 January 2025), New Food highlights recent food and beverage recalls in the UK and US.

Recall Roundup: plastic contamination and undeclared sulphites

Listeria monocytogenes contamination

In the UK this week, Lidl Northern Ireland is recalling a batch of Deluxe Sriracha Cheddar Cheese Wedge (250g) due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in this product. The affected batch has a best before date of 11 May 2025.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe, sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms, including fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. For pregnant women, infection can result in miscarriage or stillbirth.

If you have purchased this product, do not consume it. Instead, return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Undeclared sulphites

Greggs is recalling its 2-pack Steak Bake because it contains sulphites that are not declared on the label.

Due to a packaging error, some packs contain Sausage, Bean, and Cheese Melts, which include sulphites. These were incorrectly packed in Steak Bake packaging, meaning sulphites are not listed on the label. This poses a potential health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.

The affected product has a best before date of 19 May 2025.

If you have purchased this product and have a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites, do not consume it. Instead, return it to your nearest Iceland store for a full refund.

Plastic contamination

Terry Smyth Ltd is recalling various Cape Herb and Spice products due to the potential presence of plastic, making them unsafe to eat.

The recall applies to the following products with best before dates from September 2026 to May 2027:

  • Cape Herb and Spice Seasoned Salt
  • Cape Herb and Spice Extra Bold Peppercorns
  • Cape Herb and Spice Salt & Pepper
  • Cape Herb and Spice Himalayan Pink Salt
  • Cape Herb and Spice Sizzling Steak House Seasoning
  • Cape Herb and Spice Atlantic Sea Salt
  • Cape Herb and Spice Chilli & Garlic
  • Cape Herb and Spice Rainbow Pepper

If you have purchased any of these products, do not consume them. Instead, return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Undeclared allergens

In the US this week, Monkey Spit is recalling several of its BBQ sauces due to undeclared allergens. Consumers with allergies to milk, wheat or soy risk serious or life-threatening reactions if these products are consumed.

Recalled Products:

  • Monkey Mop BBQ Sauce: Undeclared milk (Best by: 11/07/2026A)
  • Swamp Mob BBQ Sauce: Undeclared soy (Best by: 12/13/2025A)
  • Atomic Mop BBQ Sauce: Undeclared milk and wheat (Best by: 03/19/2026D)

These products were sold locally in retail stores along California’s central coast and through mail orders on the Monkey Spit website.

No illnesses have been reported to date. If you have purchased any of these items, do not consume them. Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Undeclared milk

Wismettac Asian Foods is recalling 2.46 oz packages of Shirakiku brand Curvee Puffs Corn Puff Snack (Curry Flavour) due to the presence of undeclared milk.

Consumers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk are at risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.

  • Last distributed: January 10, 2025

If you have purchased this product, do not consume it. Instead, return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Undeclared almonds

D. Coluccio & Sons is recalling its 300g packages of Colussi Cantuccini Chocolate Drops (chocolate chip cookies) due to the presence of undeclared almonds. Individuals with tree nut (almond) allergies risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products.

Product Details:

  • UPC: 8002590006020
  • Lot Numbers and Best Before Dates: Lot # 3540152, BBD 15-01-2025 and Lot # L354150, BBD 29-05-2025.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after the product manufacturer in Italy issued a foreign recall notice, revealing that almond-containing products were distributed in packaging that did not disclose the presence of almonds. A subsequent investigation found the issue stemmed from a temporary breakdown in production and packaging processes.

Consumers who have purchased Colussi Cantuccini Chocolate Drops cookies are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Undeclared sulphites

Finally, Apna Wholesale Inc is recalling its 7oz and 14oz packages of Paras Premium Golden Raisins due to the presence of undeclared sulphur dioxide (sulphites). Consumers with severe sensitivity to sulphites risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products.

Product Details:

  • Package Sizes: 7oz and 14oz
  • Packaging: Clear plastic packages
  • UPC Codes: 818051014811 (7oz) and 818051014828 (14oz)

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors, followed by analysis by Food Laboratory personnel, revealed undeclared sulphites in the product.

Consumption of as little as 10 milligrams of sulphites per serving can cause severe reactions in some asthmatics, and in certain sulphite-sensitive individuals, it may trigger anaphylactic shock. Analysis of Paras Premium Golden Raisins showed they contained 56.8 milligrams of sulphites per serving, far exceeding this threshold.

Consumers who have purchased Paras Premium Golden Raisins are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
