Makzemo LLC of Brooklyn, NY is recalling Balquis Yemeni spice, because of potential lead contamination.
Lead is a naturally occurring toxic substance present in our environment in small amounts. Everyone is exposed to lead from daily actions such as inhaling dust as well as food and water consumption.
Exposure to larger quantities of lead can cause lead poisoning. While lead can affect nearly every bodily system, its effects depend upon the quantity and duration of exposure and age of the person exposed.
Symptoms can include abdominal pain, vomiting, lethargy, irritability, weakness, behaviour or mood changes, delirium, seizures, and coma. However, infants, young children and the developing fetus can be affected by chronic exposure to quantities of lead that may not result in obvious symptoms of lead poisoning.
A child with lead poisoning may not appear sick, or exhibit obvious changes in behaviour, but can lead to learning disabilities, developmental delays, and lower IQ scores.
