Heatherfield Foods, Inc. is recalling over 4,000 pounds of a pork sausage product due to incorrect gluten free claim labelling.
The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that Heatherfield Foods is recalling a pork sausage product due to mislabelling.
The product was found to have a gluten free claim displayed on the front of the label despite containing gluten in the form of wheat.
Wheat is also listed in the ingredients, which is an allergen, and can cause symptoms such as breathing difficulties, nausea, hives, bloating of the stomach, an inability to focus and in some cases, anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic response. However, there have been no reported incidents of reactions thus far.
The raw Longanisa sausage items were produced in 2019 between March and July and shipped to retail establishments in Hawaii. Those with the establishment number ‘EST. 4846’ are being recalled inside the USDA mark of inspection.
FSIS is advising customers not to consume the product and instead discard or return to the place of purchase.
